Foster Parent Traning

The Turning Point Family Care staff and foster parent training program is intended to be leading edge and strength-based, designed to cultivate the potential for all children, and to employ restorative interventions with our most troubled and challenged children.  The Turning Point Family Care foster parent training systems are designed to disseminate proactive policies and to teach strategies to better service children who are in conflict with family, school, and community. 

Turning Point Family Care professional training draws on the strengths of childcare professionals, family advocates, community policy leaders, researchers on child development, and children themselves in search of methods to bring about positive outcomes. 

Pre-licensing Training Items

1. Orientation contract and program (agency mission statement, philosophy, treatment approach) licensing regulations, and Code of Conduct – 8 hours
2. CPR and First Aid (will not be avialable online) – 8 hours
3. Orientation to Foster Parenting: “who cuts it and who doesn’t” – 2 hours
4. TEAMCARE: Team building and management – 2 hours
5. Management Approach: The Fifth Discipline – 2 hours
6. Life Space Crisis Intervention – 28 hours
   

Total Pre-licensing Training – 50 hours

Post-licensing Training (first year training, provided monthly)

1. Family Systems: Abuse and neglect – 3 hours
2. Impact of abuse and neglect on child development – 2 hours
3. Sexual abuse – 2 hours
4. Clinical Diagnosis, Mood Disorders, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Oppositional Defiant, etc. – 12 hours
5. Effective Discipline – 2 hours
6. Cultural Issues in placement – 1 hour
7. Effects of care-giving on the foster family – 2 hours
8. “Rebuilding Children’s Lives – A Blueprint for Therapeutic Foster Care & Treatment Parents” – 20 hours
9. “A Child’s Journey Through Placement”: Attachment, bonding, and separation/loss – 8 hours
   

Total First Year Training (pre and post) – 102 hours

Additionally, starting in the second year, there is an internal company requirement that our parents must participate in at least 30 hours of professional training per year.
